Wife, kids, one of the dogs and mother-in-law just left to make the 1,000 mile 1-day drive to Phoenix. I’ll fly there one-way in 2 weeks to drive the return trip. This will be the 6th time the Outback had done this trip. It has been an awesome long-haul vehicle - tons of space, comfy seats, decent ride, and around 27 MPG.

That is not a wagon, it’s a crossover.

Why on god’s green earth would someone choose to drive to Phoenix during summer?

If I can rest my chin on the roof with my feet flat on the ground it's a wagon.

Too many people going for too long for it to make sense to fly. AC keeps the car cool. And honestly I prefer the desert at 112 degrees and no humidity to the 100/50+% afternoons here.

I feel for anyone who comes to Phoenix to get away from the heat in July. My neighbor summers in Phoenix. Her other home is in Florida. Fuck humidity. It was 120F at my house a few weeks ago though, which even without humidity is pretty fucking terrible.

I am 6'2, so that rule doesn’t apply to me.

Probably the worst time of year to come here.

I’ve been at all times of the year. It’s the worst, but I don’t mind it much. Family we are visiting have a pool and we’ll take a couple of day trips up to the mountains where it is (slightly) cooler.

Both suck. Here you get covered in sweat just walking from the office door to the car. In Phoenix it feels like someone is pointing an industrial sized hair dryer at your face when you go outside. For me it's just trading one for the other. I can't imagine living somewhere like Florida or south Alabama this time of year where it's even hotter and humider than SA.

Ha I’m 6'2" also. I guess since there are so few true wagons left for sale in the US I’m willing just call “crossovers” that I can see over top of wagons to pretend there are more of them.

I call them soft-roaders. Wagons which are designed to fly over gravel and mostly flat off-road terrain. Further and faster than any normal sedan, but no serious rock-crawling or mudding.
Plus, they look a lot better than a normal crossover IMO. Longroof FTW!

For some reason I rode my 40 year old air cooled motorcycle to work on a recent 119F. No, joke, my legs started burning at one point and I actually thought the bike had caught fire.

We make this trip every summer and I'm always amazed to see multiple air cooled motorcycles out on the road.

I even had a Corvair for a while which I drove around one summer. Only overheated once on me.
